Profile

Ira Jacknis is Research Anthropologist at the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, UC Berkeley.  His research specialties include the arts and cultures of the Native peoples of western North America, museums, modes of ethnographic representation (especially photography, film, and sound recording), and the history of anthropology.  His publications include The Storage Box of Tradition:  Kwakiutl Art, Anthropologists, and Museums, 1881–1981, and Food in California Indian Culture.  He is the photography editor for the critical edition of Boas's Social Organization and Secret Societies of the Kwakiutl (1897).
