Martin Levitt is Librarian of the American Philosophical Society (APS), the repository of the papers of Franz Boas.  Levitt supervises the staff that is digitizing major elements of the collection for the purposes of facilitating the documentary edition, and he helped negotiate a co-publishing arrangement between APS and the University of Nebraska Press for the prospective Boas Papers volumes.  Levitt specializes in public history, and his involvement in the Boas project is rooted in core values that include broad access to primary source materials, supplemented, in this case, by expert interpretation.  Levitt is also engaged in building a center for Native American Studies at the APS.
