The emergence of modern themes and methods in linguistic and anthropological research, especially in the American and Americanist traditions.

Michael Silverstein is currently Charles F. Grey Distinguished Service Professor of Anthropology, Linguistics, and Psychology at The University of Chicago, where he also serves as Director of the Center for the Study of Communication and Society.  In the Boasian tradition, he has done linguistic and anthropological fieldwork in indigenous communities of the northwestern regions both of North America (principally Chinookan, Sahaptian, Tsimshianic families) and of Australia (Worora and congeners).  His historical studies of the development of the fields of anthropology and linguistics have centered on this tradition and its leading figures.
