German fieldnotes, shorthand.

Rainer Hatoum, received his Ph.D. in anthropology in 2002 at the Goethe University, Frankfurt a.M., with a study on Intertribal Powwows. Between 2005 and 2012, he worked in different positions at and with the Ethnological Museum in Berlin, including two three-year collaborative research projects with FU Berlin financed by the Volkswagen Foundation (2007-2009), and the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (2009-2012). While the first project, a collaboration with the Navajo Nation on the basis of a wax-cylinder collection of ceremonial songs, already reflected on the impact of Franz Boas, it was the second one that led to a closer look at specific aspects of his work. Starting with an analysis of Boas’ first collection from the Northwest Coast, Hatoum subsequently turned to other results of Boas' work, most noteworthyhis shorthand fieldnotes, which then led to an involvement with the Boas Critical Edition project.
